Auf dem Herbstfriedhof

Inspiriert vom Leben der Marianne Wirtz,
*1876 +1956

4. Entwurf

Bold and Beautiful

Sea, old sea,
Please hear my plea,
Wash over me, all over me.

Sea, bold sea,
Come speak to me
And tell me of your mystery.

Sea, deep sea,
Take back that key
And make a clean sweep of me.

Sea, green sea,

Unleash your gleam
Roll over and enrapture me.

Most Of The Time

by Bob Dylan

A song for when it hurts

Most of the time
I'm clear focused all around,
Most of the time
I can keep both feet on the ground,
I can follow the path, I can read the signs,
Stay right with it, when the road unwinds,
I can handle whatever I stumble upon,
I don't even notice she's gone,
Most of the time.

Most of the time
It's well understood,
Most of the time
I wouldn't change it if I could,
I can make it all match up, I can hold my own,
I can deal with the situation right down to the bone,
I can survive, I can endure
And I don't even think about her
Most of the time.

Most of the time
My head is on straight,
Most of the time
I'm strong enough not to hate.
I don't build up illusion 'till it makes me sick,
I ain't afraid of confusion no matter how thick
I can smile in the face of mankind.
Don't even remember what her lips felt like on mine
Most of the time.

Most of the time
She ain't even in my mind,
I wouldn't know her if I saw her
She's that far behind.
Most of the time
I can't even be sure
If she was ever with me
Or if I was with her.

Most of the time
I'm halfway content,
Most of the time
I know exactly where I went,
I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide,
Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside,
I don't compromise and I don't pretend,
I don't even care if I ever see her again
Most of the time.

Publications_Bis

Well, it seems that things are moving on in terms of the publication of my poems. My German poems Farben (Colours) and Bevor die Nacht vergeht (Before Night Passes By) have been published in different Collections/Anthologies of German Poetry. Farben has been published twice so far: In the 2007 Anthology of The Frankfurter Bibliothek des Zeitgenössischen Gedichts, and in the Best-Of-Collection 2008 of the Bibliothek Deutschsprachiger Gedichte.

Farben was also chosen for a Special Edition of the Frankfurter Bibliothek which is a yearly collection of the 150 best poems of all poetry publications of the Editor. I have also been invited to a collective reading at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2007, but had to decline the invitation because of the late stage of my pregnancy with my daugther (or let´s say: I had a good reason to decline... I would have been to nervous to do that at that stage...;-))

Bevor die Nacht vergeht was now picked for publication in the 2008 Anthology of the Frankfurter Bibliothek.
Moreover, I won the third price of a local poetry contest with Todeserwarten.

And last but not least, I am working on the publication of my English poems, that will most likely be entitled 40 Love Flashes.

Dorf_01

Dieses Dorf, dieses Dorf--

So begrenzt,
so schräg in den Berg gekeilt,
dass einzig der Glockenschlag
den Tag zerteilt,

wo man Hunde begräbt,
weil die Zeit verweilt,
und die Toten sich drehen
vor Unzufriedenheit.

Dieses Dorf, dieses Dorf--

So vertraut,
so sanft an den Hang gelegt,
dass die Stille Tagträume
aus Blüten webt,

wo die Steine atmen,
wenn die Sonne sich regt,
und die Lebenden hören,
wie das Herz Ihnen schlägt.

Wer bist Du ?

Für meine Tochter

Wer bist Du, mein Mädchen?

Fielst
braun und seidig
in mein Herz
und hast es aufgedeckt,

locktest die Liebe raus
aus ihrem wohlgehüteten Versteck
und brachtest unverfälschte Freude im Gepäck.

Wer bist Du, mein Mädchen?

Kamst
Flaumig zart,
vanillefein
mit kleiner Faust,

Dein Engelslächeln
hat die Kälte aufgetaut
und alle Zweifel in mir abgebaut.

Wer bist Du, mein Mädchen?

Bist
fröhlich-frisch,

Sylvia Plath ~ Three Women (extracts)

First Voice

I am slow as the world. I am very patient,
Turning through my time, the suns and stars
Regarding me with attention.
The moon´s concern is more personal:
She passes and repasses, luminous as a nurse.
Is she sorry for what will happen? I do not think so.
She is simply astonished at fertility.

**************

What did my fingers do before they held him
What did my heart do, with its love?
I have never seen a thing so clear.
His lids are like the lilac-flower
And soft as a moth, his breath.
I shall not let go.
There is no guile or warp in him. May he keep so.

**************

What is it that flings these innocent souls at us?
Look, they are so exhausted, they are all flat out
In their canvas-sided cots, names tied to their wrists,
The little silver trophies they´ve come so far for.
There are some with thick black hair, there are some bald.
Their skin tints are pink or sallow, brown or red;
They are beginning to remember their differences.

**************

I think they are made of water; they have no expression.
Their features are sleeping, like light or quiet water.
Thes are the real monks and nuns in their identical garments.
I see them showering like stars on to the world -
On India, Africa, America, these miraculous ones,
These pure, small images. They smell of milk,
Their footsoles are untouched. They are walkers of air.

*************

Can nothingness be so prodigal?
Here is my son.
His wide eye is that general, flat blue.
He is turning to me like a little, blind, bright plant.
One cry: It is the hook I hang on.
And I am a river of milk,
I am a warm hill.

***********

How long can I be a wall, keeping the wind off?
How long can I be
Gentling the sun with the shade of my hand,
Intercepting the blue bolts of a cold moon?
The voices of loneliness, the voices of sorrow
Lap at my back ineluctably.
How shall it soften them, this little lullaby?

How long can I be a wall around my green property?
How long can my hands
Be a bandage to his hurt, and my words
Bright birds in the sky, consoling, consoling?
It is a terrible thing
To be so open: it is as if my heart
Put on a face and walked into the world.

************

I shall meditate upon normality.
I shall meditate upon my little son.
He does not walk. He does not speak a word.
He is still swaddled in white bands.
But he is pink and perfect. He smiles so frequently.
I have papered his room with big roses,
I have painted little hearts on everything.

I do not will him to be exceptional.
It is the exception that interests the devil.
It is the exceptilon that climbs the sorrowful hill
Or sits in the desert and hurts his mother´s heart.
I will him to be common.
To love me as I love him.
And to marry what he wants and where he will.

************

Third Voice

The swans are gone. Still the river
Remembers how white they were.
It strives after them with its lights.
It finds their shapes in a cloud.
What is that bird that cries
With such sorrow in its voice?
I am young as ever, it says. What is it I miss?

These verses are taken from Sylvia Plath´s poem "Three women ~ A Poem for Three Voices", written 1960

À la claire fontaine (At the Clear Fountain)

Chanson enfantine

À la claire fontaine,
M'en allant promener
J'ai trouvé l'eau si belle
Que je m'y suis baigné

Refrain:
Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
Jamais je ne t'oublierai

Sous les feuilles d'un chêne,
Je me suis fait sécher
Sur la plus haute branche,
Un rossignol chantait

Refrain:
Chante rossignol, chante,
Toi qui as le cœur gai
Tu as le cœur à rire,
Moi je l'ai à pleurer

J'ai perdu mon amie,
Sans l'avoir mérité
Pour un bouquet de roses,
Que je lui refusais

Refrain:
Il y a longtemps que je t´aime
Jamais je ne t´oublierai

Je voudrais que la rose,
Fût encore au rosier
Et que ma douce amie
Fût encore à m'aimer
(autre version: Et que le rosier même
À la mer fût jeté.)

Il y a longtemps que je t´aime
Jamais je ne t´oublierai

Flussabwärts

(4. Fassung)

in rauschenden Gesängen.

tief in mir tanzt mein Kind.

Und wenn im Traum mein Herz zerspringt,
dann öffnet sich mein Blick,
für das, was man die Liebe nennt -
sie trotzt dem Ungeschick!

Emmeline; Chapter V, part 2

More Good News:-))

Hey, good news are blowing in these days...

I received a letter yesterday by my hometown, saying that I won one of the first three prizes in the poetry competition that I had participated in a few months ago!!

Don´t know which of the prizes I won yet, the award ceremony only taking place on April 3rd (just a tiny couple of weeks before my baby´s due date), but I´m delighted and curious about it any way. The award ceremony will include a reading of the winning of the award-winning texts by a renowed speaker and a celebration event. After my first print publications last year, this wil be my first little award for a German poem, and my first appearance *en public, oh oui!!!*:-)

Oh, and moreover, there´s another poem that has been accepted for print publication for November 2008.

The theme of the contest wasn´t such a funny one though: Mercifully Defying Death. I won with a poem that I granted to my late, beloved grandma in May last year, at a stage when I for my part had to dash some persistent hopes (but neither friendship and affection, in case anyone should ever wonder!)

But today, February 2008, life is smiling at my little world again:-)

Being on parental leave as of next week, I plan to get back to writing and poetry soon. Stay tuned, my precious loyal friends and readers (esp. you, reasonrhymer! I will get back to you next week with a long letter, promise!)

My musical mood: Paolo Nutini ~ New Shoes

Note on a Song

I´ve discovered an Alicia Keys tune lately by watching a tape of StarAc´,the French issue of "Superstar" (ok you may hit me for this, but I´ll take it with a smile:-)). Anyway, one of the candidates - Maureen - a wonderfully talented young French lady with a perfect voice (believe it or not, but she is really brillliant) sang "If I Ain´t Got You" with Alicia. Just the two ladies and a piano. Well, I was so blown away and deeply moved by their performance that I rewinded the tape at least five times to listen to it over and over again! Being alone at the house, I laid on the ground, listened to the music, felt my baby move inside and just handed myself over to the music. I don´t know why this happened at this point - globally, I am quite serene these days and I haven´t reacted this way in months - but I suppose that the music unleashed my inner voice calling deeply hidden emotions back to life..

The next day, I started to look for the song, but didn´t find this particular live version, of course not. The two versions currently available through iTunes or other platforms are nice as well and worth listening, but nothing in comparison to that strangely enchanting duet of a star and a "nobody".

Some things can´t be put down. Like a beautiful, inspired voice.

Maureen decided to leave the StarAc´ show after that duet, and try to find a way through the music jungle on her own. I think she was right.

Ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen,
die sich über die Dinge ziehn.
Ich werde den letzten vielleicht nicht vollbringen,
aber versuchen will ich ihn.

und ich kreise jahrtausendelang;

Der Zeit in gleicher Schalen stille ruhn;
Vom Tage,
Vom heute gewesenen Tage.

Das uralt alte Schlummerlied,
Sie achtet´s nicht, sie ist es müd;
Vom Tage,
Vom heute gewesenen Tage.

Hermann Hesse ~ Stufen

Und traulich eingewohnt, so droht Erschlaffen;

In kalten Landen, in Sibiriens weiter Ferne,

Hidden Track

How comes my mind is spinning back
To someone of whom I have lost track?

How comes that memories are keeping track
Of times that will never be comig back?

How comes thoughts of my personal off-the-track
Persist in a fallacy that´s impossible to wreck?

That again and again, my expectations are cutting him some slack,
Whereas surely, my feelings have become a single-way track,

That my heart is still busy with fault tracking,
Whereas its beating has not the least of a backing?

That despite all those obvious and vicious facts,
It believes in signs and wonders off the beaten tracks?

Can anyone please show me the next step
Or help me to get back on the right track?

Good News:-)

Good news: In a few weeks, I will be a published poetess!!!

One of my German poems has been picked for the 2008 edition of the Frankfurter Bibliothek des zeitgenössischen Gedichts (Frankfurt Library of Comtemporary Poetry). This edition offers a representative cross section of literary culture of the German society. And in the letter I received, it says: "The editor therefore particularily looks for contributions of authors who have not yet been discovered, whose literary career still lie ahead of them."

Moreover, it states that "the Frankfurter Bibliothek is one of the most widespread lyrical publications of the last decades. It is bought worldwide by the most important libraries, e.g. by the Wiener Staatsbibliothek (Vienna State Library), the Schweizer Nationalbibliothek (Swiss National Library), the Französische Nationalbibliothek (French National Library) and the National Library of Congress in Washington."

I am very happy and proud, as you may guess:-)

And finally, by being published, I have automatically entered a contest for a scholarship for a one-year-course in Literary Writing at the Cornelia Goethe Akademie for Literary Writing in Frankfurt - the first adress for new talented writers in Germany! So please wish me luck!!!

Even if I don´t get the scholarship (which I probably won´t!), I have made up my mind to apply for that course and offer myself the luxury of seriously consecrating myself to writing. For some special reasons, the next two years shall be the perfect time for doing so... but that is another beautiful story in my life that I will unveil in a little while:-)))

Oh, life is such a Wonderland!

Liebeskreisel

Für kurze Zeit huschten Reflexe und Lichter
Durch Herzensland;

Ach, so viele tausend Menschen kennen,
Dumpf sich treibend, kaum ihr eigen Herz,
Schweben zwecklos hin und her und rennen
Hoffnungsvoll in unversehnem Schmerz;

Sag´, was will das Schicksal uns bereiten?
Ach, du warst in abgelebten Zeiten
Meine Schwester oder meine Frau;

Kanntest jeden Zug in meinem Wesen,
Spähest, wie die reinste Nerve klingt,
Konntest mich mit einem Blicke lesen,
Den so schwer ein sterblich Aug´durchdringt.
Tropftest Mäßigung dem heißen Blute,
Richtetest den wilden irren Lauf,
Und in deinen Engelsarmen ruhte
Die zerstörte Brust sich wieder auf;
Hieltest zauberleicht ihn angebunden
Und vergaukeltest ihm manchen Tag.
Welche Seligkeit glich jenen Wonnestunden,

Vom Meere strahlt;
In Quellen malt.
Der Staub sich hebt;

In Ähren strahlt.

Beim trüben Lampenschein in bittren Leiden
Gedacht´ich dein;
Die bange Seele flehte nah dem Scheiden:
Gedenke mein!

Ich denke dein, bis wehende Zypressen
Mein Grab umziehn;

Something Has Been Forgotten

When you said: Go away!
I turned around and left you in style,
Hoping you´d finally ask me to stay,
Or change your mind, after a while.

When you said: No; wait!
I slackened my pace, paused in the twilight zone,
Still feeling confidence instead of hate,
Losing eternities on hoping alone.

When you said: Come again!
My mind went wild, ready to spoil you rotten,
When slowly I realized in pain
That something had been forgotten.

Something hidden under the surface
Of your impenetrable explanations,
Something blurred in the tearless mist,
Of my predictable lamentations.

Dammit! Something has been forgotten!
Why can´t we get round to looking ahead?
Why don´t we tempt fate, turn for the better,
And fight for friendship, before it´s too late?
